Tom Holland Starring in London West End Revival of Romeo and Juliet

Posted by Larita Shotwell on Thursday, August 1, 2024

Tom Holland is hanging up the spandex and taking on Shakespeare’s most famous doomed lover.

That’s right, the “Spider-Man: No Way Home” star will play Romeo this summer in London’s West End. The production of “Romeo & Juliet” probably won’t be like the classical, tights-heavy versions you’ve seen before. That’s because Jamie Lloyd — who applied his minimalist, stripped-down approach to stuffy classics like “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “The Seagull” and “A Doll’s House” — is overseeing the revival. They’ve also attracted major stars like James McAvoy, Emilia Clarke, Tom Hiddleston and Jessica Chastain. “A Doll’s House” was nominated for several Tonys last year. Lloyd’s production is being billed as a “pulsating new vision of Shakespeare’s immortal tale of wordsmiths, rhymers, lovers and fighters.”

Holland announced the news on social media. The limited run will last for 12 weeks and will begin performances in May. No word yet on who will be playing Juliet opposite Holland, but the actor’s involvement means this is instantly a hot ticket.

Holland made his stage debut as the title role in “Billy Elliot: The Musical.” “Tom Holland is one of the greatest, most exciting young actors in the world,” Lloyd said in a statement. “It is an honor to welcome him back to the West End.”

Along with his roles in the Marvel films, Holland starred opposite Mark Wahlberg in the adventure film, “Uncharted,” which was a box office hit. He also headlined the gritty drama “Cherry,” and the Southern Gothic story “The Devil All the Time.” Other film roles include “Lost City of Z” and “In the Heart of the Sea.” Holland most recently appeared in the Apple TV+ series “The Crowded Room.”
